History of the CMS Math Camp Program
The Canadian Mathematical Society began actively promoting math camps in the late 90’s. In 1999 the Imperial Oil Charitable Foundation became the title sponsor of the CMS Math Camp program. (In 2007 Imperial Oil moved their contribution from the camps Program to support of the International Mathematical Olympiad team. Canada’s IMO team is also organized by the Canadian Math Society.) More recently, the CMS Camps program has been supported by the various Mathematical Research Institutions, Provincial Governments and others.
In 1998 there was one camp, The National Math Camp, which took place in Waterloo. (The camp was funded by the Canadian Math Society.) In 1999 there were 3 camps. Last year 18 camps were run across the country. The camps varied considerably in size and length, but they had one thing in common: Mathematics!
We have held a Camp at UNB each year since 2000. In addition to funding received by way of the Canadian Mathematical Society (above) the UNB Camp receives direct contributions from The Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences (AARMS), the Government of New Brunswick, and of course UNB.
